Becoming a new parent can be an exciting and joyful experience, but it can also be overwhelming and challenging. Adjusting to the changes that come with a new baby can be difficult, and it is common for new parents to experience a wide range of emotions, from happiness and love to anxiety, stress, and even depression.

In addition to caring for a new baby, new parents may also face changes in their relationship dynamics, work-life balance, and social support network. Sleep deprivation and physical exhaustion can also contribute to feelings of stress and overwhelm.

Postpartum depression (PPD) and postpartum anxiety (PPA) are mental health disorders that can occur after childbirth. PPD is a type of depression that affects mothers within the first year after giving birth, while PPA involves excessive worry, fear, and nervousness that interfere with daily activities. Both conditions are common and can affect women from all walks of life. Symptoms can include sadness, irritability, mood swings, anxiety, panic attacks, difficulty sleeping, changes in appetite, and feelings of guilt or worthlessness. It is estimated that up to 1 in 10 new fathers experience PPD, while PPA affects about 1 in 25 new fathers. The symptoms and risk factors for PPD and PPA in men are similar to those experienced by women. Symptoms may include sadness, loss of interest in activities, fatigue, difficulty sleeping or concentrating, irritability, and feelings of worthlessness or guilt. It is important to seek professional help if experiencing any of these symptoms, as untreated PPD and PPA can have negative effects on both the mother and the child.

Statistics Related to Postpartum Depression

  • 10-15% of new mothers experience PPD
  • 9-16% of women experience PPA
  • Women who have a history of depression or anxiety, a lack of social support, or a difficult pregnancy or childbirth are at a higher risk for PPD and PPA.
  • Men can experience postpartum depression and anxiety (PPD/PPA) just like women, although they are often less likely to seek help for it.
  • According to a 2019 study published in JAMA Pediatrics, the prevalence of paternal PPD in Canada is estimated to be around 10%, which is similar to rates of maternal PPD.
  • However, many experts believe that the actual number of men affected by PPD/PPA may be higher, as men are less likely to report their symptoms or seek help.
